Open Teaching Models: A Research Proposal

Teaching, a process transmitting knowledge, skills and experience from teacher to learners has been in existence since prehistoric days. The nature and scope of this process, and means and methods employed to carry it out have been the reflections of the times and prevailing technologies. In that book-less times of the past, oral method of instructions was in domination and with the arrival of printing press, book-centric education or teaching assumed center stage. The wall-bound class-room model of teaching emerged and exists even today as leading mode of teaching.

The prevailing technologies of the times are WWW. With the arrival of WWW, which is not bounded by time, distance often language and is source of free resources,   the nature, scope and challenge of teaching is getting transformed. There is a need to evaluate the existing models of teaching in view of this newly emerged empowering technology and how can be enabled by the use of it.  Given the unique nature of WWW, it is also necessary to explore new models of teaching that take teaching beyond the walls of traditional class rooms and learner beyond the traditional sources of knowledge.

    This research propose to

    • investigate the process of teaching in light of  this newly emerged technology-enabled environment and
    • develop effective teaching models that that help us in harnessing the potential of open source

The work of a teacher in linked environments.

Development of the scope, nature and character of  LinkBase becomes the most important preoccupation of teacher ( or professional). There are three dimensions to this development

    1. the present “linkbase” must be made effective
    2. its potential must be identified and realized
    3. it must be made into different “linkbase” for a different future ie differently linked environment
